The shrill squeal of static faded into the steady, muffled whir-whir-whir of a twin-rotor civilian helicopter.

Lance Richards gasped, his eyes snapping open as his hand instinctively shot to his waist, reaching for a service rifle that wasn’t there. Instead, his fingers brushed against the pristine, tailored canvas of a charcoal-grey security uniform. The tropical humidity of the jungle was gone, replaced by the crisp, recycled air of an air-conditioned cabin.

    “Rough dream, Sergeant?”

Lance turned his head toward the pilot’s cabin, taking a deep breath to settle his racing heart. Outside the reinforced windows, the endless, sun-dappled blue of the Gulf of America stretched to the horizon. Beneath them sat a massive steel structure rising out of the waves—an offshore platform that looked like an oil rig, but shone with sleek, white corporate branding. Bold blue letters across the primary landing pad spelled out: AQUATIC DYNAMATRIX.

“Just old noise,” Lance muttered, adjusting his collar. He ran a heavy hand over his buzz-cut hair. After six months of rejected job applications and cold stares from recruiters who only saw the dishonorable discharge on his military record, he was in no position to complain. AquaDyne had picked up his resume, approved his contract without an interview, and flown him out to Florida within forty-eight hours.

The helicopter touched down on the pad with a gentle bump. The side door slid open, and two guards in tactical wear motioned Lance toward a central hatch on the platform.

“Welcome to the top of the ocean, Mr. Richards,” one of the guards said, shouting over the turbine whine. “The lift is waiting.”

Lance grabbed his duffel bag and stepped into the platform’s central elevator bay. The doors glided shut, sealing away the ocean breeze. The interior of the car was spacious, equipped with glass walls and a polished metallic floor.

As the elevator lurched downward, a soft chime rang out. From a small projector in the ceiling, a beam of cyan light spilled onto the floor, coalescing into a shimmering, waist-high blue figure. The walking, talking hologram took the shape of a cheerful woman in a lab coat, smiling with unnatural, pixel-perfect warmth.

“Good morning, Security Officer Richards!” the hologram chirped, her voice light and melodic. “I am ADA, the Aquatic Dynamatrix Automated Assistant. Welcome to your new home! We are currently descending to the ocean floor, one thousand fathoms below sea level.”

“One thousand fathoms,” Lance repeated, looking out through the reinforced glass. The bright sunlight rapidly dissolved into deep azure, then twilight blue, and finally the pitch-black void of the deep abyss. Heavy halogen lights under the elevator car flickered on, cutting through the dark to reveal schools of deep-sea fish and glowing jellyfish drifting past. “That’s a long way down.”

“Indeed!” ADA beamed, doing a light pirouette on the metal floor. “AquaDyne operates at the cutting edge of human progress. Our deep-sea biodomes allow us to pioneer groundbreaking agricultural research, harness unlimited geothermal energy, and feed millions through sustainable ocean farming. Together, we are building a brighter tomorrow for all humankind!”

“Sounds expensive,” Lance said dryly, watching a giant squid glide silently past the glass.

“Philanthropy is priceless, Officer Richards!” ADA giggled, her smile fixed and entirely detached from the crushing pressure waiting outside the glass. “Please remain standing as we approach the primary airlock. Atmospheric pressure within the complex is regulated at a pleasant sea-level equivalent.”

A series of heavy mechanical thuds echoed through the shaft as hydraulic locks engaged. Outside the elevator, the pitch-black ocean gave way to an astonishing sight: a vast network of illuminated glass domes resting on the ocean floor, connected by massive steel transit tubes.

The elevator settled with a quiet hiss. The holographic assistant bowed cheerfully. “Welcome to Aquatic Dynamatrix! Have a productive day!”

The double doors parted, and Lance stepped out of the dark lift directly into a blinding wall of light and noise.

He wasn’t standing in a sterile military base or a cramped submarine. He was standing on a cobblestone-lined avenue beneath a massive, clear acrylic dome. Overhead, artificial sunlight mimicked a bright spring morning. Palm trees lined the wide street, framing bustling cafes, high-end storefronts, and recreational parks where off-duty scientists and administrators laughed over coffee.

Lance stood at the edge of the promenade, holding his duffel bag, stunned by the sheer scale of the underwater metropolis.

“Mind-blowing, isn’t it?” a voice called out over the crowd.

Lance turned toward the central security counter. Standing behind the desk, grinning in a Chief of Security uniform, was a broad-shouldered man with a familiar, square-jawed face.

    Corporal James Billings.
